New 2009 State Maps Now Available

NASHVILLE - The official 2009 Tennessee Transportation Map is now available to assist travelers in their planning efforts.  This year’s state map has been totally redesigned to feature larger, easier to read information and interstate mile and exit markers listed right on the map. The 2009 map includes the same important information about TDOT’s SmartFIX40 accelerated construction project in Knoxville, a listing of Tennessee’s Biofuel Green Island Corridors, information about emergency reference markers, and Tennessee 511 as in years past, but is produced on a larger scale making it easier to read.

State Seeks to Minimize TennCare Budget Cuts by Seeking Relief from 21-Year Old Court Order

NASHVILLE - Facing mounting revenue shortfalls, the State of Tennessee today provided updated information to the U.S. District Court in Nashville concerning potential budget cuts that TennCare faces as a result of the deepening economic recession. The state is seeking relief from a long-running lawsuit known as Daniels that, if granted, could minimize the planned cuts that are needed to help balance the state’s budget.

Morgan County Woman Must Repay the State after TennCare, Food Stamp Fraud Convictions

NASHVILLE – A Morgan County woman accused of obtaining TennCare benefits she did not qualify for must repay the state for medical and pharmacy services provided through TennCare.  She must also reimburse the state for food stamps she received from the Department of Human Services (DHS).

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that Stuart Brunson, who has served as Deputy Governor since December 2006, will leave his administration later this month. Brunson has been a long-time advisor to Bredesen, serving as campaign manager for Bredesen’s election in 2002 and for his re-election in 2006, in which the governor won all of Tennessee’s 95 counties.

High School Students Compete to Direct Next Teen Safe Driving Ad in Project Orange Video Contest
 
NASHVILLE – The road to stardom now has a shortcut for Tennessee high school students. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is looking for the director of their next ad on teen safe driving in work zones and they want a Tennessee high school student to create it. The first ever Between the Barrels Project Orange Video contest begins Monday, January 5, 2009 and is open to all Tennessee High School Students. Teens who write, shoot, and edit a 25 second public service announcement on teen safe driving in work zones and submit it to TDOT by March 1, 2009 could see their ad played on television stations across the state, receive a free set of Bridgestone tires and receive a $500 prize.

HARRIMAN, Tenn. -- Governor Phil Bredesen visited Roane County today to review the progress of clean-up efforts at the site of the coal ash spill at TVA’s Kingston Fossil Plant. The Governor was joined by members of his Cabinet, including Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke and Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan, Health Commissioner Susan Cooper, and General James Bassham, Director of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

Record Month, Record Year for Office of Inspector General

NASHVILLE – December was a record month and 2008 was a record year for the Office of Inspector General (OIG), the law enforcement agency tasked with pursuing fraud and criminal activity in TennCare and preserving the integrity of the expanded Medicaid program.
 
“We are very serious about our duty to eliminate fraud in TennCare and to see that justice is served for people committing these crimes,” Inspector General Deborah Y. Faulkner said. “We pursue a lot of prescription drug fraud cases but we have also worked many cases where people try to hide their household income to get public-financed health care services.”

Governor Bredesen Announces Grants to Three Middle Tennessee School Districts to Reduce School Bus Emissions

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen announced grants today for three Tennessee school districts to retrofit school buses and reduce diesel emissions. The grant program is a collaborative pilot project between the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Department of Environment and Conservation.
 
“Reducing school bus emissions helps create a healthier environment for students and improves air quality for all Tennesseans,” said Bredesen. “I’m pleased we can assist these school districts in providing cleaner transportation as we continue to reduce diesel emissions in Tennessee.”
